Free Event – Earth Day: Celebrating Our Local Waters

April 27 , 12:45 pm to April 27 , 3:00 pm

15 Rutherford Place, New York, NY

Did you know that 70% of your body consists of water—just like everyone else’s on the planet? Water connects us physically with one another, no matter who we are.

What’s more, as New Yorkers we connect with more than five hundred miles of waterfront — from the Hudson River to the Harlem and East Rivers, down to New York Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Come join us April 27th to celebrate these local waters and to find out more:

  • What creatures live and grow in our rivers and estuaries?
  • What can they tell us about climate history?
  • How are we healing the bodies of water that have been harmed by human activities?
  • How can we appreciate and enjoy them?

Our speakers include Dr. Dorothy Peteet, Senior Research Scientist at NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Adjunct Professor, Columbia University speaking on “Hudson Marshes and the Secrets They Hold”; Agata Poniatowski, Public Outreach Program Manager at the Billion Oyster Project speaking on “What’s in Our Water? What Oysters Can Teach Us About the Harbor”; Christine Suhonen, Water Engineer speaking on “The Intersection of New York City and the Element of Water”.  We’ll have a special presentation by First Day School. And our live music—by none other than Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir—will inspire us all to know and love the water that is within and around us.

Come enjoy the food and music, learn from the speakers, music and participate in festivities.

A complimentary light lunch will be served at 12:15pm in the Common Room prior to the program start.  All are welcome.
