Joint Statement on New NYC Illegal Hotel Lawsuit

Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried, and State Senator Liz Krueger jointly issued the following statement in response to news that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office of Special Enforcement has filed a new lawsuit targeting a major illegal hotel operator in midtown Manhattan:

“We applaud the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement’s newest lawsuit to reclaim residential apartments and shut down a large-scale illegal hotel. Residential apartments in residential buildings are supposed to be rented to residents. We must do everything we can to keep profiteers from turning homes into illegal hotels and worsening our housing crisis.

“Lawsuits like this one would not be possible without the Home Protection Law of 2010 and our strong city fire and safety codes. Certain companies, led by Airbnb, keep saying they oppose illegal hotel operations like the one targeted in this lawsuit, but their words are hollow: they’re lobbying for changes that would weaken enforcement and make lawsuits like this one nearly impossible.” Read more…
