Laura Zingmond appointed B.P. representative to Panel for Educational Policy

I’m proud to announce the appointment of Laura Zingmond as my representative to the Panel on Educational Policy (PEP). The first PEP meeting is being held tonight, at the High School of Fashion Industries.

Laura is not just a public school parent; she’s been on the inside of hundreds of public schools in all five boroughs in her role as a researcher for InsideSchools.org, a project of the Center for NYC Affairs at The New School.  She knows all the players and roles in the NYC Department of Education. Laura and I agree on the fundamental need to make the PEP a more-active body than it was during the previous administration—and to reduce the robotic ‘teach to the test’ practices that have infected the public school curriculum.”

Under the Bloomberg Administration, PEP was rarely more than a rubber stamp for questionable policies such as co-locating charter schools within traditional public school buildings. I hope that with Laura Zingmond’s appointment, as well as the De Blasio administration’s new choices, PEP can serve as a more thorough arbiter of education policy as we work to improve our school system.

Zingmond is a life-long New Yorker, born in Brooklyn and raised on Staten Island, where she attended PS 23, IS 72 and Port Richmond High School. Her children are the fourth generation in her family to be educated in New York City public schools. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, she and her family live on the Upper East Side
