How to File Your Taxes Safely and for Free

In Person:

Visit a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in your neighborhood. VITA site preparers are IRS-trained and certified to help you file your taxes and claim credits like the EITC and NYC CCTC. At some sites, you can open the City’s SaveUSA account when you file. And some sites let you drop off your tax documents and pick up the completed return later! Trained staff at these sites protect your documents and use a secure website to share them for tax preparation. Click the map below to find a site nearest you.

The online service is easy and secure. You must have a valid email address and use a secure computer to protect your privacy. Note: NYC residents must enter “NYC” when prompted to fill in your locality (Box 20 on your W-2 form). Some W-2 forms incorrectly list it as “New York.”

If you earn $31,000 or less, file your taxes with TurboTax Freedom Edition.
If you earn between $31,000 and $60,000, file your taxes with myfreetaxes.com.
