Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer issued the following statement on the tragedy in Charleston, S.C., which claimed nine lives last night:
“With the rest of the nation, I mourn the tragedy that occurred at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina yesterday. As we learn the horrific details of this latest shooting spree, it seems clear that this was a crime of hate.
“The deranged racism of this shooter is all too familiar, and cannot be treated as an isolated, freak occurrence. In our communities, culture, and government we must rededicate ourselves to understanding and overcoming the racism and prejudice that still plague our society—and reducing the scourge of easily available weapons.”
