Statement on Horse Carriage Legislation and Central Park

Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer issued the following statement on the withdrawal of pending City Council legislation affecting the horse carriage industry and Central Park:

“I don’t believe horse-drawn carriages belong in city traffic in the 21st century, but I’ve had serious concerns about the proposed compromise. The practicalities were always daunting — how the Central Park stables would be refurbished, how carriages and horses could fit in the existing stables, and how the carriages would travel from the stables to the park’s loop roads on unpaved bridle paths. I’m glad this proposal has been withdrawn.”
