Opening February 18 at The Museum at FIT, Art X Fashion is a major exhibition exploring the entangled and shifting relationship between fine art and fashion, featuring 140 garments, textiles, and accessories from MFIT’s permanent collection. Organized by MFIT Curator of Costume and Accessories Dr. Elizabeth Way, the exhibition interrogates the designation of fashion as a “decorative” or “applied” art and invites viewers to consider the question, “Is fashion art?” through historic and contemporary examples. Art X Fashion traces fine art and fashion’s parallel aesthetics from 18th-century rococo to late-20th-century postmodernism and explores the work of artists such as Salvador Dalí, Sonia Delaunay, Kerry James Marshall, Antonio Lopez, and Pablo Picasso, as well as fashion designers including Hussein Chalayan, Issey Miyake, Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Vivienne Tam.
