NEW YORK, NY – Today, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal hosted a press conference to decry Mount Sinai’s plans to share the private medical records of trans children receiving gender-affirming care with the Trump administration.
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal said: “Mt. Sinai’s refusal to disclose the circumstances under which it plans to share the private medical records of trans children with Trump’s DOJ is deeply concerning and potentially in violation of NY’s Trans Shield Law, which I wrote. Under our law, parents must be provided with adequate notice to assess whether their children’s rights are being fully protected. Mt. Sinai must immediately provide more context and confirm that it has provided the NYS Attorney General with any request it has received from the Trump DOJ. “The Trump Administration’s intentional targeting of NY’s trans community during Pride Month is particularly despicable. I spoke to a parent who received a call from Mt. Sinai about her trans child’s medical records. She told me, ‘In NY, we protect ourchildren. We don’t feed them to the beast, especially for political convenience.’
“I couldn’t agree more.”
Council Member Carl Wilson said: “The Trump administration’s subpoena of medical records from our trans youth is yet another step in this administration’s goal in stripping basic human rights away from our community. They are weaponizing our children to push their radical hateful agenda. All New Yorkers, especially our youth, have a right to privacy. I unequivocally support the trans New Yorkers and allies in their class-action lawsuit which asks a federal judge to declare any subpoena’s of this kind, whether it’s to NYU Langone or Mount Sinai, as unconstitutional.”
