The Energy Equity, Housing and Health Program at Mailman School of Public Health, the Energy Opportunity Lab in the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA, and the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at the Columbia Law School are organizing a half-day, community-focused public event called Power Uptown on September 27th from 3:30pm – 7pm, on the sidelines of New York Climate Week.

Power Uptown will have three components: (1) Energy Opportunity Expo with experiential pavilions related to energy insecurity, including practical demonstrations of the day–to-day possibilities of clean cooking and clean energy transition, (2) Energy Opportunity Teach-inwhere experts will share practical tips, resources, and success stories, empowering residents to make informed choices about energy consumption and conservation and where to seek help, and (3) a Panel discussion with elected and appointed officials who have been leading various initiatives at the federal, state, and city levels in support of energy justice and opportunity.

Power Uptown will feature dedicated community leaders, organizations, and policymakers tacking energy insecurity, including:

  • Dr. Peggy Shephard, Co-founder and ED of WE ACT for Environmental Justice
  • Mychal Johnson, Co-founder of South Bronx Unite
  • Daphany Rose Sanchez, Executive Director, Kinetic Communities Consulting
  • José Tulio Gálvez Contreras, Director – Affordable Solar Program, SolarOne
  • Hon. Shaun Abreu, New York City Council Member, Manhattan’s 7th District
  • Representatives from Association For Energy Affordability, ConEdison, and more.

This event is part of the Bollinger Convenings, which is Columbia University’s new high-profile initiative which aims to showcase innovative initiatives that bring scholarship and knowledge to build collaborations across and beyond academia to advance human welfare and benefit society. It is also supported by the bedari collective and the JPB Foundation, among others.

Power Uptown is open to all NYC residents particularly from Manhattan and the Bronx, and all professionals, students, researchers, and community leaders interested in joining hands to create better energy opportunities in our neighborhoods and beyond!
