Step into Revolutionary-era Murray Hill for a guided walking tour exploring New York City’s important role in the fight for American independence. The tour traces the events surrounding the Battle of Kips Bay, the British invasion of Manhattan on September 15, 1776, and the retreat of George Washington’s army through what is now Midtown Manhattan.
As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of its founding, this event brings local Revolutionary War history to life in the neighborhood where it happened. The tour also shares the story of Mary Lindley Murray and her estate, Inclenberg, which once stood near present-day Park Avenue and East 37th Street. Her role has become one of the more enduring Revolutionary-era tales associated with Murray Hill, still remembered in the area today.
After the tour, guests are invited to continue the experience at a Colonial Tea Reception featuring character portrayals and an opportunity to talk, learn, and enjoy refreshments together. This educational event offers an engaging way for both adults and children to connect New York City’s streets with the people and events that shaped American history.
The approximately one-hour tour covers 1.5 miles. Students ages 6–12 attend free with a paid adult. Tour + Tea and Tea-only tickets are available.
