“At a moment of frustration and setbacks in government at all levels, today, we deliver a win for New Yorkers. The passage of the City of Yes zoning package is a direct response to an unprecedented crisis in housing affordability. It will lead to the creation of an estimated 80,000 desperately needed new homes, many of which will be targeted for low-income New Yorkers.
This proposal’s passage was not a foregone conclusion. The politics of housing in New York City are brutal. This victory was only possible thanks to a tough and sustained fight by a citywide coalition of advocates, with outstanding leadership from Commissioner of Planning Dan Gardonick, New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, and the 30 Councilmembers who took a stand when it mattered most.
The passage of City of Yes alone will not solve our city’s housing crisis. There is still much, much more work to do. But this is a huge step forward, proving that despite the challenges of the moment, New York City can still lead.”
