On Thursday, May 1st, 2025 from 5pm to 8pm, the Humanities Department at City Tech presents ‘Gotham, Get your Groove on!,’ an exciting concert event featuring a fascinating myriad of music groups, presented in quick tandem. The event will be held at City Tech’s Theater, just a 3-minute walk from the Jay-Metrotech (A-C-F-R) subway station, or an 8-minute walk from the Borough Hall (2-3-4-5) station. Slated to perform are the lively Yacine Boulares Trio, Taiko Masala, Samba New York!, and Dan Cooper Quartet. This free event for the City Tech Community is also open to the public – RSVP on Eventbrite: https://tinyurl.com/bdhewj4t
SAMBA NEW YORK! is a world-renowned samba company dedicated to educating, entertaining, and uplifting people of all backgrounds with the exhilarating music and dance of Brazil. Percussionist-ethnomusicologist Philip Galinsky founded the New-York-City-based organization with his wife, Managing Director, Valerie Galinsky, in 2003 as a professional performance company and academy inspired by the famous “samba schools” of the Rio Carnaval.
Founded by Master drummer Hiro Kurashima, TAIKO MASALA performs at concerts, festivals, museums, and schools, in addition to its active teaching schedule. Their arsenal of instruments, all handmade by the ensemble, ranges from small eight-inch hand-held drums, to five-foot barrel drums, and features the giant 250-pound O-daiko. Japanese instruments including Shakuhachi, Fue, Koto, and dancing add richness and color to their programs.
Hailed by Radio France Internationale as “a Tunisian man in NY, one of the most talented jazzmen of his generation,” YACINE BOULARES is a French-Tunisian saxophonist, composer, and curator. His trio Abu Sadiya’s album was hailed by Le Monde as “a glittering instrumental suite, all fluidity and golden colors.” The trio performed at Jazzahead and their US tours have included Lincoln Center and the Jazz Gallery in NYC.
Composer/Multi-Instrumentalist DAN COOPER was born and raised in Manhattan, and educated at Columbia, NEC, and Princeton. For decades, Dan has taught music courses at SUNY-FIT, Marymount Manhattan College, and starting in 2025: City Tech. Dan’s compositions have been described as “full of instrumental virtuosity and sly humor” (-Fanfare), and “invigoratingly eclectic to the max” (-Strings Magazine). Performing on 6-string bass guitar, Dan shares the stage with Kaoru Watanabe – flute, Yayoi Ikawa – keyboards, and Gene Lake – drum set.
THE HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT maintains a unique position within our college of technology. The department offers courses in art history, communication, world languages, music, and theatre, providing students with laboratories for creative expression, cultural and historical understanding, and practical tool sets for work and living. These enriching competencies help students appreciate multiple perspectives and synthesize ideas, ultimately laying the groundwork for a sense of possibility and a clearer recognition of an individual’s place in society.
